Electrical Safety and Arc Flash Awareness

Electrical hazards are unforgiving — there's rarely a warning before contact, and an arc flash can cause a serious injury in a fraction of a second, without anyone even touching the equipment. This talk is about awareness and habits, not a substitute for your facility's arc flash study or PPE category requirements, which a qualified electrical safety program has to determine for your specific equipment.

The safest way to work on electrical equipment is to not work on it energized at all. When that's not possible, everything else in this talk matters even more.

  • Treat all electrical equipment as energized until it's been tested and proven de-energized — never assume.
  • Follow your facility's established PPE category and minimum approach distance requirements for the specific equipment you're working on. Don't guess or estimate these.
  • Keep panels, disconnects, and electrical rooms clear of stored material — you may need fast access in an emergency.
  • Never bypass a breaker, fuse, or protective device to "get the job done."
  • Report damaged cords, exposed wiring, or missing panel covers immediately instead of working around them.
  • Know where the nearest emergency shutoff is before you start work near energized equipment.
